Thanks to this month's #kitchncookbookclub pick, @sisterpiedetroit's book, @meghan_splawn keeps finding herself with piles of pie dough scraps in her fridge. Thankfully, @lisalouiselud shared a tip beloved by bakeries like hers and clever grandmothers around the world: pie scrap cookies! Gently fold your bits and pieces of leftover dough to create extra layers, brush with egg wash, sprinkle with sugar, bake, then stuff in your mouth. Lisa suggests sandwiching them with buttercream, which is a nice idea, except... We can't figure out how to make a batch of the cookies last long enough to have any around to pipe frosting into by the time it's made 😂 Get the details at the link in our bio. Made with black cocoa powder, this cake is every chocolate lover's dream. It's basically a fancy chocolate bar, just if it were a cake you made yourself instead of a gone-in-an-instant treat that you paid $18 for (though, there's no shame in that game). $18 sound like an absurd amount to spend on a chocolate bar? Well, just take that as an indication of just how good this batter bakes up to be (since I don't think I'm legally allowed to tell you to just eat it with a spoon, ya know?). Grab the recipe at the link in our bio. #thekitchn

The thing that probably makes diner pancakes taste best is that, heh, you didn't have to cook them. Or, it could be that no one is on dish duty after the meal. But what you probably didn't know is that diners use a secret ingredient to make their pancakes extra special (hint: it rhymes with balted bilk bowder), and @sheela.m.prakash is spilling the beans today. Click the link in our bio to learn how to up your pancake game! (Image: @joe.lingeman) #thekitchn

While some may ponder the universe, wondering if we are alone, we focus on far more terrestrial matters. Some of life's, dare we say, greater mysteries. For example: could mashed potatoes be.... Perhaps... Better? Is the old-school boil-and-mash technique truly the best way, or do we stand by it only for convenience? Thankfully, this question was actually one we could answer, so we did. Click the link in our bio to read our thoughts. (Image: @joe.lingeman) #thekitchn (Note: only Earth potatoes were used in this test)
(P.S. Aliens: please share any Space potato cooking tips in the comments below)

There are a lot of anxieties that come with choosing a dish for a potluck, including the obvious one: "Is anyone even going to eat what I bring?" Now, when it comes to this question, there are two camps. One, you could be anxious that no one is going to eat it, which could make you feel sad or embarrassed. Two, you could be anxious that people will enjoy your dish so dang much that you won't have any to take home and enjoy yourself! Well, reader, we hope you're in the first camp because when it comes to this delightful recipe from @turshen: leftovers just plain don't exist. It's the perfect balance of simple and crowd-pleasing, which leads @laurenkodiak to call it her "Holy Grail Potluck Dish." Get the recipe at the link in our bio so you can make it your go-to, too. "When Caleb and I were first married, he was freelance and he was just getting jobs so we didn't have a lot of money. I would have to be creative. So we’d get a ton of potatoes and I’d be like what can I do with these? I’d make everything — gnocchi, hashes—something different every time. We’d also have a lot of eggs, so to mix it up, I’d turn them into a soufflé so we’d have something nice to eat with just a little bit of stuff. We might only have a few things but always get creative with what we eat." That’s how @humblepiebham (who is an interior designer by trade and baker by blood); her husband, Caleb (who is a freelance photographer); and their five “littles” (ages 8 and under) approach most things in life — especially food. “We are really great at making something out of nothing,” Laura told Kitchn. “We like looking in our cabinet and thinking We don’t have anything … then looking again and using what we have to make something great.” Click the link in our bio to read the whole story! You love garlic butter. You love steak. So why not combine the two for the best of both worlds? Just make sure you serve some bread on the side to soak up all the sauce, because if there's anything you love even MORE than garlic butter and steak, it's garlic bread. Grab the recipe at the link in our bio! #thekitchn
