Slow swung 6/8 tones from a session at @power_station_ne some months back. Snare is a @sugarpercussion 6x14 mahogany with an 8” @paistecymbals Dark Energy splash on it. Sound crafting by @evbakke. 🎧

One week from today... an impromptu clinic at the new @nelson_drum_shop location. Nashville drummers who care about the church gig world: Come hang and join the conversation! “Worship teams” are a huge part of my background as a musician. I’m looking forward to this.

I am the “Lead Music Director” at a rad church in Phoenix called @ccvonline. This past weekend we released our fifth full-length album, a live recording called Light & Shadow. I was deeply involved in the demo and arranging and producing aspects of this project. The songwriters combed and refined and labored for real art. The live band explored and rehearsed and dug in and played so well. The production team captured and honed and pursued every corner of excellence. I stood in the arena and watched the whole thing unfold on the night of the recording and felt like a proud music dad. I feel very lucky to be part of @ccvmusic.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
The record is available on all digital platforms and there are a few live vids on YouTube as well. (Special shout out to @kylebucklin for playing the drums at a very high level 👊🏼)

Yesterday I turned 39. Last week I was in Africa. My oldest daughter begins high school in the Fall. Tomorrow I am traveling to Minnesota to have dinner with my mom who is now a widow. One of my friends has a car that drives itself. I went on a blind date my freshman year of college and ended up marrying the girl. Somehow I’ve made a living as a professional drummer. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I don’t really have a point here other than life is a crazy journey and I’m so grateful for it. ❤️

Today my wife and I baptized our youngest into the faith of her parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. The spiritual dimension of my life is certainly an ever-evolving journey, but I’m thankful for all of the steps that have led me to this point, and I’m happy to welcome my little girl into journeying alongside me. ❤️

Last month I spent three days tracking a record for a rad British artist named @phoebekatis. Her voice/songs are wonderful and the project turned out great. First tune is out today and the full record hits soon. Produced by @coryjwong. Drum tones by @strawberrius.

I’ve been on a Grateful Dead kick lately, which led me to a Phish binge today. Backstory: I discovered Phish in 1996 when my friend @petebuch gave me a bootleg tape from one of their shows. I listened to it incessantly while driving to/from my sophomore year of high school in my dad’s black Isuzu Rodeo. Phish was SUCH an important link in the chain of my musical development - my first exposure to real improvising and my gateway drug to Jazz. By the time my years of being a Phish fan peaked I’d heard them live 35 times and had over 400 bootleg recordings. The tape from Pete is what started it all, and on my Phish binge today I came across this high quality digital release of that very bootleg Pete gave me 20+ years ago. It features the great Karl Perazzo as a guest on aux percussion. Listening to it has been so much fun, even though I don’t admire the band now the way I once did. Their lyrics are always trite/silly, and they don’t nail their live renditions of tricky tunes. But the group improvisation is seriously so rad. I love it. Wow. Memories.
