I proudly completed the SLO Ultra Half Marathon yesterday. Very happy to finish in 10th place in my age division & 103rd out of 241 runners.
It was billed as the most difficult half marathon in the State of California with more than 3200 feet of climbing over 13.2 miles. Believe it or not it was actually really, really fun! Being with hundreds of lunatics that enjoy this type of thing was great. Some of the climbs were completely ridiculous with the toughest gaining 900’ in less than 2 miles at mile 5. It was a magical experience running the ridges of the peaks with small groups as the sun crested the mountains. Running-climbing for 3 hours straight was a challenge.
The day before I volunteered to run the furthest out aid station on the full marathon 26+ miles with a gain of 6000 feet. There’s something about taxing your body to it’s extreme & doing it with a bunch of others who support you. You get into a trance after mile 5 & pushing on you have to constantly assess how your body is doing. I am lucky as I have had great knees all my life. I would encourage any & all to do even a 5k. Not only will you have a goal in training for it. You will probably meet a lot of other like-minded people who want to get off the couch & have some fun!!! - 21 days ago
