Samyak Kaninde (@samyakphoto) photographed a Bar-tailed Godwit next to a broken piece of plastic in Akshi Beach, Maharashtra.

Bar-tailed Godwits undertake the longest migratory flight, travelling over 7000 miles, non-stop. They make a pitstop in India, where they spend a few weeks. The photographer captured this image to show how these birds come in contact with plastic trash, during their sojourn.

Gaurav Patil (@_gaurav_patil_) photographed Zoanthids in Malvan, Maharashtra.

Zoanthids are colonial soft corals found alongside a reef as well as in the intertidal zone of the sea. They show a symbiotic relationship with tiny algae known as zooxanthellae. Corals provide these algae shelter, and in return, these algae provide food to corals, by doing photosynthesis. As the sun rises, the coral polyps open and as the sun sets, the polyps close. This picture was clicked after sunset. There are only two polyps which are open (Palythoa mutuki) while the rest of the mat (Zoanthus sansibaricus) is closed.

#NiFHiveFeature: Sunil Sachi (@disturbedfred_photography) photographed an elephant in the golden evening light, at the Bhadra Tiger Reserve, Karnataka.

In a large-scale study conducted this year, it was observed that deforestation and loss of elephant habitats have led to an increase in the number of human- elephant conflicts. #NiFHiveFeature: Tapan Sheth (@tapansheth) photographed a baby Crested Treeswift in Gir National Park, Gujarat.

During the breeding season, Crested Treeswifts build small nests which they glue to the tree branches using their saliva. This treeswift species lays one egg, and both parents care for the hatchling.

Last gasp: A Dhole (Asian wild dog) with its Spotted Deer prey in Kabini forest, South India. (Actually, the deer was dead and half-eaten, but kept a very dramatic expression)

Rajesh Thapliyal (@rajeshthapliyal) photographed a Yellow-throated Marten against the breathtaking backdrop of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, Uttarakhand.

Related to ferrets, badgers and weasels, Yellow-throated Martens, as the name suggests, have a distinct creamy-yellow throat patch. Their coat ranges from dark brown to yellow-brown, and they have long bushy tails.

#NiFHiveFeature: Nanda Kumar (@nandana_images) photographed a leopard in Nagarahole National Park, Karnataka, as it stopped for a drink of water.

Leopards can go for almost ten days without drinking water, getting their hydration from the food they eat. During the hotter periods of the day, they usually prefer to rest in bushes, caves or on tree branches.
