Wearing wool as a vegan?
I refused to wear wool for a long time due to the industry’s cruel practices. Unfortunately, the alternatives are mostly synthetic fibres, harmful to garment workers, the environment and my skin.
Once I discovered this, I found myself in a big inner conflict.
Now I wear wool but only secondhand: boycotting fast-fashion, any direct links to the commercial wool industry and reducing fashion waste (which would have further social, environmental and animal wellbeing conflicts). To some this might be “vegan hypocrisy” but for me this seems to have the smallest neg. environmental and social impact.
There are materials such as: hemp, cotton, bamboo.. and I opt for them, but they are a rare secondhand find - and that is my “fashion priority”. A complex issue, with complex arguments.
This is mine.
[PS: I don’t wear leather, even secondhand. I don’t want animal skin, chemically treated and often linked to child (&exploitative) labour on my skin. Possibly hypocrisy, but it’s a complex topic 🙃] - 60 minutes ago
