Congratulations to my family, Michelle Mitchell and Kevin O'Brien, for being nominated for the Vernon Chamber of Commerce Tourism Award 👍
Michelle and Kevin are a very forward thinking couple who brought Stand Up Paddling (SUP) to Kalamalka Lake. They own and operate the KALAVIDA SURF SHOP, B.C.'s original paddleboard shop. Located a stone's throw from Kalamalka Lake, Kalavida Surf Shop rents paddleboards for people to experience what SUPing is all about and then helps them purchase the right SUP board for their needs! They sell some pretty cool clothing and beachwear too! They also rent electric ebikes and cruiser bikes as another way to enjoy the Kal area.
Michelle and Kevin expanded their vision by acquiring the KALAMALKA GENERAL STORE, situated right beside Kalavida Surf Shop. They worked their magic and have transformed this store into a fun, community place to stop for supplies on the way to the beach, fresh baked goods, general grocery items and delicious ice cream cones.
They didn't stop there! Nestled inside the historic Kal General Store is the RAIL TRAIL CAFE. The Cafe serves as a meeting place, cozy corner and rendesvous point for visitors to the area who are coming to enjoy the great outdoors. It is also beside an entry to the Okanagan Rail Trail, a 48.5 km walking/biking trail that runs from Vernon to Kelowna. Local governments stepped forward to purchase a discontinued CN rail corridor, providing an amazing pathway of connections to nature and communities.
This powerhouse couple is very deserving of the nomination for the Vernon Tourism Award. I applaud their dedication to creating a very cool destination corner in Vernon, B.C. If you are ever in the Vernon/Coldstream area, have ever wanted to try stand up paddling, need a delicious coffee, ice cream or muffin, stop in to experience my cousin and her husband's amazing vision! You will be glad you did!
