DEATH OF A PUP - extract from the book I co-wrote with @peterblinston ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have been following #Tait ’s pack for over five kilometres. They have killed an impala and are starting to devour it. It has been a long hard hunt.
Within moments, I count 12 #hyena surrounding the pack, gazing on hungrily, clearly preparing to attack. Tait’s pack is 15 strong with five pups to defend. While her #wolves feed, Tait remains highly alert.
The hyena launch their attack en masse, the feeding ends and all the wolves prepare to fight. A hyena bounds into the pack, its eyes firmly fixed on the very young #Tammy . She is moments from death.
Three #paintedwolves respond immediately and attack the hyena with vicious bites to its rear. With full momentum behind the hyena, it diverts its attention to the remains of the kill and grabs a leg. With its mouth full, and the risk to the #pups diminished, Tait’s daughter Gemma chases it away, its tail in her mouth, freeing the other wolves to defend further onslaughts.
When the pandemonium eventually dies down, the hyenas leave. I count the pups and can see only four. The wolves soon realise this and start to ‘hoo-call’ but there is no reply. - 45 minutes ago
