Let’s talk about HANS ZIMMER!!! If you’re unfamiliar with his work, Zimmer was composer for The Dark Knight trilogy, The Lion King, Rango, Megamind, Interstellar, Blade Runner 2049, and the middle 3 Pirates of the Caribbean movies. He’s a renowned composer in the world of cinema, and each piece he does has a unique charm to it. But today I’m focusing on two of his works in particular: his Inception and Dunkirk scores.
The first thing that probably comes to mind when someone asks about Inception’s music is the extremely loud horn blare. The “Inception bwaa” if you will. While this may just seem like it was chosen to sound cool, it actually has a deeper reason for existing. The bwaa mimics how ‘Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien’ sounds slowed down. As this song is used to signal to our main characters that time is almost up in the dream, the extremely slow speed at which the song would need to play to achieve the effect of the score gives the audience the sense that we are trapped deep within layer after layer of dreams without us even realizing it. Zimmer also uses orchestral strings paired with synthesized drumbeats in some tracks in order to invoke the mystery of the film: is the world real or a dream? The music parallels this by neither being truly real or fake itself.
For Dunkirk Zimmer does something really interesting. As the film follows three interconnected narratives happening on different timescales (1 week for the beach, 1 day for the boat, and 1 hour for the RAF pilot). The score uses a set of 3 different electronic drum clicks set to play at different tempos in order to invoke the sense that 3 clocks are recording 3 different speeds of time. All of this paralleling the 3 time intervals of the film. Zimmer also employs a Shepard Scale, a way of layering musical note so that it creates the illusion that the notes are always getting higher in pitch. This is extremely effective in creating tension, a fact which is employed greatly in Anxiety: The Movie. I mean Dunkirk.
tl;dr: Hans Zimmer is a musical genius.
