| BOOK REVIEW |
Often known as the greatest book ever written in Tamil, Ponniyin Selvan authored by Kalki R. Krishnamurthy was published in the 1950's. It comprises of five volumes and it's 2500 pages long. It gives us a vast insight about the Chozha Dynasty who ruled the southern part of India. It narrates the early life of Arulmozhi Varman, who's famously known as Raja Raja Chola-I, who built the breathtaking, 217ft tall, Brihadheeswara Temple which stands erect till date! For years I've heard my grandmother and my aunt raving about it and I finally decided to give it a try. And that is one of the best decisions I've ever taken.
I started reading it, thinking it would be like one of those vintage tamil movies where the females utter meaningless and cheesy phrases and yes, cries a lot. But what I found there is completely different. Bold and strong female characters, vivid descriptions and witty conversations blew me away! The tightly woven plot, the gripping narration and the added humour, got me completely hooked to it. I finally started to see what made it carry the never-ending craze even after half a century.
But what truly impressed me is the character development! It was so perfectly done that I'd talk about it for days. Each and every character was flawed, especially the women in the novel. I detested a few characters in the beginning but I ended up loving them towards the end! The women play a major part and the entire story is nothing without them. The men are basically the pawns in their game! The story progresses slowly unraveling mysteries leaving us longing for more. The ending is what I personally liked very much. It was beautiful. Yes, you should read it!
My rating: 5/5
I buddy read this with @bookly.wizard
and I had vera level fun discussing it with you! And sorry for all those spoilers that I accidentally gave out!😝 ✨
PS : Don't buy this translation. It sucks. Lots of spelling mistakes. Pavithra Srinivasan's translation was the best! But unfortunately, only 3 out of 5 books were released, so I was forced to read this.
QOTD : What's your favourite historical fiction? Mine would be this!❤️
