Pattern: #mnflint by @megannielsenpatterns (More details about pattern and mods in a separate post.) Fabric: Triple gauze Flint trousers. #yestheresatriplegauzetoo
This unusual fabric, unsurprisingly, is much like double gauze, but has a third layer in between, which is much gauzier than the outer two (very loosely woven), but which gives the fabric a lot more loft than a double gauze. In this particular fabric the outer layers are quite a loose weave as well, and it feels much thicker and spongier. ·
I bought it in Tomato Fabrics in Tokyo in 2017, and I've always been perplexed about what to make with it. It's cotton, so breathable and therefore summery. But it's thick and cosy, so surely too warm for a summer dress? Would I not be too hot in warm weather and too cold if a brisk wind blows? ·
Finally, after weeks of enigmatic, hard to dress for British weather (cool in the mornings, kind of humid and warm-ish at lunchtime; will the office a/c be off or in blast chiller mode?), I took a punt that this complicated fabric might be just right for a confusing climate.
So I used it to make another pair of #mnflint trousers, since that versatile pattern can work for all seasons, and be dressy or casual, depending on fabric and styling.
Since the wrong side of the fabric is a different colour, I felt I should utilise both sides, but the truth is I look terrible in cream, it's just too close to my skin colour 👻. But you can catch a glimpse of the wrong side in my windy Boomerang (Swipe 👉🏻), and in the #prettyguts shot. I used navy overlocker thread in one looper and white in the other, because I find it enormously satisfying to match it to my fabric 🤓.
I used a viscose scrap for the pocket facing to keep the bulk down and add stability. I added strips of lightweight interfacing to most of the seamlines, overlocked most edges before sewing, and was very careful when handling to avoid stretching the pieces.
I can't decide if these are 1930s beach pajamas breezy or ridiculously wide in a clown pants way. What do you think? Genuinely want to know. #sewingsos · ·
