“How do I transition my kids? They LOVE foods like pizza and they’re not a huge fan of vegetables”

Kids are easy!
They just take a little extra time. Good news is they transition most times a lot faster than your husband will so that’s a bonus. In fact a lot of parents transition BECAUSE of their kids (they’re all heart chakra so they get it easier).
.
Kids don’t care necessarily about the ingredients but more so about the vessel and how it’s presented. Like Mac n cheese, pizza or tater tots. You can still make all of these things plant based, you just do it with better ingredients.
...And maybe make the food into a fun shape.

They also respond sensitively to fear. So if they’re unsure if something won’t taste good they’ll come up with every reason not to eat it.

This concern comes up so frequently I added it to my plant based jumpstart program (PBJ) alongside how to prepare family meals that make everyone happy, what to do when eating out and how to stay the course.

The course link can be found in my bio, but in case you need something ASAP, here’s 4 tips on transitioning kids easier:

1. Get them involved. When they’re proud of their food and have developed a closer relationship with it they’re more likely to want to eat it.

2. Make it fun. Put the meals in fun shapes. I like to use Pinterest for inspiration. Vegetables can be cut into cool shapes, make faces and pictures, let your inner kid play.

3. Cut the processed foods. These can alter the taste buds in crazy ways. If you want your kids to enjoy real food you gotta put your foot down and not cut corners on meals.

4. Let them pick the green. This is a rule in my house. Something green at every meal. They pick. One kid might like peas and the other likes broccoli. Instead of fighting let them choose.

Don’t forget to check out the plant based jumpstart program in my bio link.

Kombucha Pt. 1!
.
Bradley’s new thing has been “what can I help with” anytime we’re in the kitchen. Which is a lot actually! She puts on her apron & gets so excited. Sometimes it leads to her actually eating whatever we make - but I think she just wants to be a part of whatever I’m doing. And how cool is it that I get to teach her stuff like this!?
.
Have you ever made kombucha?! Who’s ready to make a batch?! Check the blog for some s u p e r easy steps to get it going 👍🏻

When can babies have salt? 🧂 New post on the PBJ blog today discussing sodium needs for kids + ways to reduce salt intake. 👌
——————————————————————————-
👉 Most sodium needs will be met through breastmilk/formula before age 12 so we recommend not adding salt and minimizing packaged food at this age. 👉 After 1, sodium limits increase slightly though it’s still recommended to minimize added salt. 👉 For most kids, the highest amounts of sodium come from processed meats (like hot dogs), cheese and packaged foods. Whole, plant-based foods are naturally low in sodium, which is another reason to fill up on veggies, fruits and grains. If using canned beans, rinse before serving to reduce excess sodium and consider no-sodium added products. 👉 More details on the blog, link in profile! ——————————————————————————-

Ensuring this boy of mine experiences plant based food from various cultures.
Thankful that our baby led journey has had this boy eating along side of his Momma, sharing meals.
Over the past year + his journey of eating has included various spices, textures & cuisine.
Hoping this early start to being offered different foods, fosters a lifetime of trying new things. 🌱🌎 #LetThemBeLittle

Loaded Puree. ⠀
⠀
Obviously not Rocket Science so this is just a reminder to you with kids of any age who would eat some kind of mash - load it up! ⠀
⠀
Hide the things your kids might need, some ideas; ⠀
. Hemp Seeds⠀
. Peanut Butter⠀
. Nuts/Seeds ⠀
....all for extra protein ⠀
. Flaxseed Oil for Omegas ⠀
. Collagen Powder ⠀
. Bone Broth⠀
....for Gut Support/Bone Health ⠀
. Blackstrap Molasses⠀
. Spinach ⠀
....for extra iron ⠀
⠀
Point is, be aware of what might be lacking and chuck it in! ⠀
⠀
My kids need iron - always! With limited food options early on when their body needed as much iron as it could get it, but couldn't, it created a susceptability to deficiency. We have had to supplement with iron in the past but now we're able to balance with food. So this is loaded with iron-rich green veg, paired with Red Capsicum (Pepper) and Broccoli so the Vitamin C benefit of those two helps their little bellies absorb the iron 🌱⠀
⠀
Of course, as they get older, Smoothies are a great way to hide the good stuff under the mask of Banana, Berries, Honey! 😋⠀

So I've had people ask me about the fruit and veggie pouches I make for my 1 1/2 yr old. So I photographed the process today!
I bought the pouches on Amazon they are by Wee Sprout. I love these! I got the 7oz ones but I'm going to be ordering a few more sets in different sizes since I have a newborn that will be using these when he's old enough for solids.
I did 2 different options this time. First is a "Green One" 😁 I keep the names simple for him. In this one today I used butternut squash, peas, carrots, spinach, kale, mango and peaches. I use coconut water usually to help blend it all up. He will usually love this blend.
The second option is the "Purple One" 😊 I used banana, strawberries, blueberries, spinach, flax, chia & hemp seeds, coconut water and a non dairy yogurt since my son is allergic to milk and we as a family are just more plant based/ vegan.
I like to offer super nutrient dense pouches to him since he can be picky and not eat much. These have always been a hit with him. I usually offer them both at breakfast and let him pick which color. Whatever he doesn't eat with breakfast he gets with his snacks. Then I offer the other color at dinner. These usually last only 2/3 days in my house, but can last in the fridge for 4/5 days and a month in the freezer.

Is a vegan diet safe and healthy for kids?🌿
Short answer is YES ✨ but read on! 💕

You might see a few headlines in the media from time to time who love telling us about children who were malnourished on a vegan diet. Read a bit further and you will see that the vegan diet was never the real issue but rather what the media chose to focus on amongst other issues.

Plant-based diets are recognised as perfectly healthy for children by the American Dietary Association and the Dieticians Association of Australia. Not only raising vegan kids is possible but it might also be the best thing you can do for their health- as long as it is a balanced abundant and diverse plant-based diet. Feeding your child chips and oreos doesn't count as a healthy vegan diet!
Some of the benefits of raising vegan kids:
- they will have decreased risks of premature death and major diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, obesity, strokes, Alzheimer, diabetes and cancer.
- good digestion and gut health from all the fibre on a plant-based diet.
- they will be more likely to eat the recommended serves in fruit, vegetables and whole grains. - they will be less likely to be picky eaters as they usually eat from a wider variety of foods.
- you will be teaching them about healthy food choices and healthy life long healthy habits by making fruit and vegetables the bulk of their diet. 🌿
🌿
I feel better as a mum knowing my children eat a diet that is going to protect their health. But if you cannot turn your whole family vegan it's okay too- just eat a bit more vegetables, add in legumes instead of animal proteins and little by little increase the amount of plant-based meals you eat as a family. You will really help your kids nutrition by including just a few more plantbased meals per week.
And if you need inspo check out my recipes to make delicious vegan family meals or send me a DM to book a nutrition consultation. 🌿😘
