Interesting for e-commerce clients >> after a year of testing, Facebook are rolling out search ad placement to all ad accounts, giving advertisers the opportunity to pop up on mobile for search terms which have commercial intent. Intent has always been the big difference between paid social and paid search (like Google Ads, for e.g.), so this is potentially big news longer-term for social advertising.
.
How do you use the placement? 📈
.
You can either choose automatic placements for News Feed ads (but I mean don’t, unless you’ve got a mammoth budget 💰) or select the “Facebook Search Results” placement in Ads Manager alongside your News Feed campaign - you must also be running a News Feed campaign to use search ad placement. Campaign objectives include product sales, conversions and traffic.
.
How does it target? 🎯
.
Well, you can’t manually sculpt using keywords like in Google Ads - FB will base it on your audience targeting and keywords the algorithm picks up from your ad content (text, product, category and description).
.
Audience targeting has always been FB Ads’ big strength, so who knows - maybe this is the start of an edge over PPC. Let’s see what happens! 🍿

Love them or loathe them, emojis are here to stay (fine by me! I like their sunny little faces 😁). Though originally thought of as a bit of a business no-no by some, they’re directly - and positively - affecting the way that people perceive and respond to brand communications and advertising.
On the fence? Here are a couple of helpful business-based fun facts courtesy of Adobe’s first Emoji Trend Report 😊 >> 8 out of 10 people believed the use of emojis made who use emojis are friendlier and more approachable 👍

94% pinpointed their ability to cross language barriers 🤗

Close to 6 out of 10 people (58%) are more likely to open an email from a brand with an emoji in the subject line 🙌

Running social ads? How about this one >> More than 4 out of 10 (44%) said they are more likely to buy products advertised using emojis 👊

And last but not least, the findings showed that 64% said they were willing to make a purchase using an emoji - listing meals, cinema tickets and clothes as examples…

So there you have it - emojis = officially a good thing for businesses. If you’d like to chat through how you might make them work for your email, organic or paid social, drop me a line!

Is it all over for the likes count on Insta? They moved to dispell rumours early in April, but @latermedia's latest blog says it's getting a full trial run in Canada later this week 😱⁣
.⁣
“We want people to worry a little bit less about how many likes they get on Instagram, and a bit more time connecting with people they really care about,” said Instagram. As part of their drive to make social media a less pressurised environment, it makes total sense - but will removing that instantly visible social proof be good or bad for businesses? Intrigued to see...⁣

I’ve gone to ground recently - just snowed under with client work and getting ready to launch my new business (more very soon!). One of the projects I’ve been working on has been site planning and copywriting for KC Caviar’s new website 👆
.
@kccaviar are a really unique business who produce Caviar in a way that’s ethical, sustainable and causes no harm or stress to the fish. They’ll retire their Sturgeon early to conservation rivers and lakes to boost wild stocks. Given the Sturgeon is on the brink of extinction, partially due to over-fishing for Caviar and meat, theirs is a rather wonderful cause! I love an ethical story, so it’s a job I’ve enjoyed very much. And who’d have thought I’d ever know so much about Sturgeon husbandry?
.
Great to work with the lovely Pippa at @etempawebsolutions , who built the site. Looks amazing! Great work.
.
And with a special nod to @roundcreative for the original design concepts 🙌

#Tuesdaytips time people! This is my go-to when I’m writing title tags for my client’s blogs. Hope it’s useful!
.
Your title tag is your blog’s elevator pitch - 50-60 characters of SEO value. It’s not just your blue link on the results page, it’s also what shows in the browser tab and the text that will be pulled when your blog’s shared on other sites and social media. It’s your chance to make a great first impression. Make it count!
.
The Dos. It should:
☞ Be an INTERESTING, non-clickbaity, relevant, accurate description of your content
☞ Contain your keyphrase as far over to the left as you can so it catches a searcher’s eye as they scan down the SERP
☞ Be the right length - stick to 50-60 characters so you don’t get cut off mid se… (aha.ha.ha 😉)
☞ If you want your brand name in there, have it to the right after a bar (or other separation)
☞ Preferably be different to your H1 - gives you more opportunity to show up for different search terms
.
The Don’ts:
☞ AVOID, like the stinky pile it is, this format - “Keyword phrase 1. Bar. Keyword Phrase 2. Bar. Keyword phrase 3…” *snooze* Oh excuse me. Nodded off there.
☞ Don’t duplicate tags across content, or they’ll compete against each other. There’s enough out there without going up against your own stuff.
☞ WRITE IN ALL CAPS. Did you know Allcaps is a verb now? It means “a way of showing anger and emotion through the internet (thanks Urban Dictionary) - like “Uh-oh, Bob’s on one. He went ALLCAPS last night in a text”. It’s not a good look for your title tag.
.
Let’s look at some examples of good title tags. Here’s a good one from @LifeHackerdotcom for an interview with @manversusbaby. It gets all the relevant information over quickly and in a way that piques interest:
.
“I’m Man vs Baby Blogger Matt Coyne, and this is how I parent”
.
Here’s another from @madeformums. This one includes their brand name at the end:
.
“Mother Pukka - who is she and what is Flex Appeal | Made For Mums”
.
And last, one from GQ which is ultra-specific with a nice touch of humour:
.
“Best Men’s Running Shoes (that don’t look awful) | British GQ”
.
Hope you’ve found this useful!

If you’ve been on Insta for a while, you’ve probably seen your Feed posts getting less and less impressions as time and algorithms have moved on, and a decline in that magic metric, engagement as a result (😱☹️)
.
Insta experts (& can’t-live-without scheduling tool) @Later say it’s time to change how we define engagement, and look to communicate with your followers through your Stories instead of just your Feed - in fact, they think Stories is so powerful as a medium that they treat it as its own channel.
.
And how do they suggest it’s best to use Stories? They’re all over stickers. “Instagram Stories stickers provide a free, easy and fun way to engage with your followers and get them invested in your brand, content and products”. They’re forecasting lots of new, engaging sticker options for 2019, and feeling the love 💗 for Countdowns (new), Polls and Questions.
.
What do you think - is Stories where it’s at for engagement?

If your small business has TAKEN OVER YOUR LIFE and your New Year, New You plans revolve around making your brand look fabulous while you spend your days knocking about the house sporting some fetching “work from home” attire 🙈… then here’s a little something that might be useful for you.
.
I wrote this blog about successful rebranding for my brilliant clients @roundcreative (super-talented Leeds Creative & Digital Agency) - you can find it here ☞ http://bit.ly/rebrand-and-reconnect
.
I’m a firm believer that brands can and should reinvent themselves visually as they evolve - the trick is to know which bits you should lose and which bits you absolutely shouldn’t. (After all, how many of us get stuck with the logos we design ourselves when we start up and we’re skint for WAAAY longer than planned?) The blog takes the case study of Stella Artois - who’ve had a rather bumpy ride on the rollercoaster of reputations, let’s face it - and talks about how they’ve used rebranding exercises to reconnect with their customers (twice) and what we can take away for our own rebranding exercises.
.
I’m finding myself doing more and more copywriting and blogging for clients, which I’m chuffed to bits about, cos I love it. My lovely client @cloudcloth very kindly said I was “a woman with all the right words”, which was bloody lovely of her, and brought a rather cheesy grin to my Christmas-ravaged chops. If you need a helping hand with your words, get in touch!
