I will never forget this trip.
It was my second time outside of my home country, I was teaching English in a preschool in Mexico City. May 2019, an entire month. One weekend, I decided to see Teotihuacán, one of the most mysterious sights of the Mexican meseta. It was a beautiful and calm day, the only sounds around me were the crunching of gravel under my boots.
I spoke almost no English this entire month— not only because English is not freely spoken in Mexico, but because I made a promise to myself for full immersion in Spanish. I suspended the study of all other languages for a month, constantly put myself out of my comfort zone, and it worked. It was a beautiful experience. In one instance, my friend Rodrigo even took me out with some of his friends who were Korean exchange students, and we visited Xochimilco together. A group of Mexicans, Americans, and South Koreans, all using the same language as a means of communication. It was so nice to not have everyone speaking English just because it’s the lingua franca!!
My Spanish has always been great, but this experience improved it and brought it to a level that I was delighted to discover. I would recommend immersion and travel to anyone who can and wants to improve in their language. Make it a motive for your learning! Language is meant to unify us. It’s up to you. - 7 hours ago
