In the mid-July 1941 the Finnish Task Force J was preparing to launch an assault towards the Kestenga municipality. The Detachment consisted of the Infantry Regiment 53, the Fortification Battalion 15, the Fortification Artillery Battalion 6 and the 2nd Battalion of the Field Artillery Regiment 16.
However, since the German offensives towards the Murman and Kandalax cities were practically stopped by the resistance and the rough terrain, the AOK Norwegen decided to strenghten the Task Force by positioning the SS-Infantry Regiment 6, the SS-Artillery Battalion, SS-Combat Engineer Company and the 2nd SS-AA Battery from the SS-Division Nord there. The 2nd Company from the Panzer-Abteilung z.b.V. 40 was ordered to join them, too.
After the fierce fights, starting on July 30, the target was reached and captured on August the 8th. Note the letter opener, a Finnish Lapinleuku puukko, in the 4th pic.
