Most people don't realize that corn is a grass seed, and contrary to popular argument, it is not harmful to cattle. In fact, it is an important source of energy. To maximize the nutritional value, feedyards steam flake the kernels. This increases palatability and allows the cattle's rumen and small instines to more efficiently break down the starch and cellulose.

The steam flaked corn is not fed individually, rather, it is mixed with roughage, grain, trace minerals, and vitamins. Every feedyard's exact rations can differ slightly, but they are each developed and closely monitored by bovine nutritionists and veterinarians to ensure the cattle are receiving a balanced diet.
When cattle are on pasture, they must be supplemented to ensure they are receiving adequate vitamins and minerals that the grass alone cannot provide.

Over the last several days, the post we made in response to Ellen’s comments on the meat/agricultural industry, went viral. It’s definitely nothing we saw coming but are grateful for the opportunity to share some truth with the world.⠀
⠀
Animal agriculture has been a hot-button topic for a long time. Misinformation is rampant. Truth seems to be a little harder to find at times, simply because producers have been vilified for so long. They are often hesitant to discuss the very thing to which they’ve devoted their lives out of sheer self preservation.⠀
⠀
We chose to share a picture of a feed yard with our original post because that is what we know. The controversy surrounding confined animal feeding programs like feed yards and dairies run deep. The public has a very skewed idea on what “they” do. It’s understandable, too. ⠀
⠀
Raising animals for consumption doesn’t sit well with some people. And that’s ok. But what is also ok, is respecting the industry and the folks who care for these animals.
⠀
No one is asking you to condone something you don’t believe in. We’re just asking you not to vilify it. ⠀
⠀
Several years ago, when we first became involved with confined cattle feeding, I had a preconceived notion on what “went on”, just like many of you who have visited this page recently.⠀
⠀
And I could not have been more incorrect.⠀
⠀
I too had seen sensational videos of abuse, mistreatment, and horrible living conditions. Do I doubt those things exist? Absolutely not. However, I know that they are the exception. I know that because I’ve seen it. My family has lived it. This is real life for us and so many others.⠀
⠀
We are not trying to change anyone’s opinion about anything. All we want to do is shed some light on a very misunderstood part of animal agriculture.⠀
⠀
You don’t have to support it. You don’t even have to like it. But you don’t have to perpetuate the outrageous lies and disparage an industry of which you know nothing about.⠀
⠀
Stop asking google. Stop sharing half truths and propaganda. If you have a question, ask the people who are involved. ⠀
⠀
Knowledge is power. Let’s use our power for good, y’all.

Glazing some quinacridone red on Carol. Fun to just play with colors as crazy as your favorite bird.

I got this little booger along with several others at @ruralkingsupply back in the spring. Once I put her out on the ground every time I go feed she jumps up in my arms. She’s the sweetest I love my chickens. #farmlife #keepingitrural #chickens #chickenmom #kentucky #farmgirlforlife

Don't mind me drinking milk with my new bff. @newmexicomilkmaid put out a challenge that I can totally get behind. Check out her posts and stories to get all the details, but basically- if you tag her in a picture or video of you drinking milk, she will donate $1 to giveagallon.com for #hungeractionmonth
Plus @cargill will match what she raises.
Awesome idea I think. I challenge everyone!
