A note on recognizing yourself as the other. A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending a dialogue between Roshi Joan Halifax and Brother David Steindl-Rast. Brother David is a 93 year old Christian Benedictine monk, and Roshi Joan is a 77 year old zen Buddhist priest. This picture was taken at the end of their discussion. (Note: I might not have the wording exactly right in this post - because for me the wording was less important than how their discussion made me feel!) At one point Brother David was talking about what happens when a person becomes connected with the larger sense of oneness that connects us all, which he referred to as becoming "Christ realized." He then turned to Roshi Joan and said, "In Buddhism I believe this is what you refer to as someone recognizing their Buddha-nature." Roshi Joan placed her hand on his arm, turned to the audience, and gently smiled. The audience broke out in applause, because it was a beautiful example of how two people who have deeply devoted their lives to different religious faiths can come to the exact same conclusion about the ultimate nature of reality.
From this perspective, there is no other, because the other is you.
You might come to this realization through Christianity, or Buddhism, or a non-religious self-help program, or a spontaneous self-transcendent experience, or sexual activity, or even atheism.
These two wise elders could have spent their time debating over the minutia of their spiritual lineages. They could have tried to argue that Christianity has it right, or that Buddhism has it right. Instead, they almost wordlessly gave the audience a felt sense of recognizing the other as the self.
The next time you feel the urge to argue your perspective, see if you can touch into the feeling of the other as you. They are simply coming to their truths in their own time, with their own methods and their unique personal evolution. It's not your job to change their mind. It's your job to be the change you want them to see. @mindandlifeeu @joanhalifax #brotherdavidsteindlrast #interconnection #interbeing #selfasother #ultimatetruth - 20 hours ago
