Confession time: this is more of a do- what-I-say than do-what-I-do scenario here. When I follow the tips I give my clients about sleep (or hopefully anything really), my life is so much better. But, I'm a night owl and waking early to take my son to school is maybe my least favorite thing about parenting. 
That being said, when I get enough sleep, I am happier, more productive, and my days run more smoothly.

馃挮Habbit Loops! One of the best way to make change!!

Most of us a trouble implementing new and healthy habits in our daily lives! We complain that our children don鈥檛 do enough around the house. We know we need to instill better habits at night to sleep better.
.

Some of the most successful people have  figured out the habit loop and how to use it in their daily lives to implement massive growth change. .

We start with a queue in our daily lives that trigger the routine, that allows us to do the new habit. Then it ends with the reward.
.

For one of my clients, I would have her set her gym clothes (shorts, shirt, sports bra, socks, and gym shoes) by her front door. This was our  queue. The routine was to go to the gym with the pre-written plan that we came up with.  Her reward was a protein smoothie that she loved to drink after her intense work out. . 
Habits don鈥檛 happen over night, they can take weeks to develop and only days to destroy. We must be consistent in the early stage until it is automatic and you don鈥檛 have to think about setting your cloths at the front 馃毆 .

We often make the mistake of thinking that in order to move forward from a situation or experience - we must have 鈥減rocessed鈥 it completely. Emotions are such a big part of our entire being, we respond to emotions physically as well as mentally.

And this is true for all emotions: both positive and negative. All the way from being excited, happy, joyful, peaceful, content to being frustrated, anxious, upset, angry and the list goes on.

All of these emotions end up affecting us and therefore our sleep too.

Often insomnia develops after a significant life event that is charged up by an emotion and it鈥檚 important to acknowledge it and work through it so the emotion can be released and the sleep can return to its normal state.

Do you find yourself constantly waking up in the middle of the night?馃槾鉅

If so, there are several things that can contribute to this, often it's not just one thing, but here are some things to consider :: 馃搷鈥 If you鈥檙e exercising in the afternoon (even when 6 hours prior to bedtime,) and you have high evening cortisol (feel wired and tired at night.).鉅
鉁 Exercising late in the day can perpetuate the dysregulation of cortisol.鉅

馃搷 鈥 If this is happening daily, you may need to also look at blood glucose regulation.鉅
鉁 Low blood sugar is a common cause of cortisol release in the night - also, think about what you ate at your last meal - sugar before bedtime, lots of simple carbs at dinner and alcohol less than 3 hours before bedtime can all create a blood sugar dive while sleeping and wake you up!

Ideally you are sleepy by 10-11pm. If you are going to bed after 11pm (and say exercising at 5pm) you may just need to tweak the timing of exercise and your last meal to get cortisol and blood sugar in a happy place.
