Fred and I recovered our first gun season deer last night! I got a call from an old friend that his wife shot a deer and they were struggling to find blood after 50 yards in the swamp. With a heavy rain expected in the morning, we wanted to get on the deer as soon as possible.
Fred was locked in from the beginning. The blood we found along the track looked like muscle blood. Even the water and dense cover did not slow him down!
After about 600 yards we ended up at the edge of a corn field and Fred jumped right in! Fred had us zigzagging through rows the entire time with quarter size drips maybe every 50 yards. Finally after about a mile we came up to her trophy!
The shot was quartering too with a low gut exit that clipped its rear leg. The intestines had completely sealed the hole, and the only blood we were finding was from the leg wound.
I was very happy with Fred tonight! He was correcting himself on trail the entire time!Another happy hunter, and another deer on the tailgate! - 1 hour ago
