St. Joseph must've had so many questions running through his mind when he found out that Mary was pregnant. He must've been confused; might have been angry; was probably distraught at the situation. Yet through it all, he remained level-headed and true to his nature of a righteous man. He thought to take a course of action that would be good for him, while at the same time, wouldn't be bad for Mary: a quiet divorce.
I'm sure it took him some time to arrive at this decision, as do many major decisions that any person has to make. And I'm sure he went back-and-forth across the different options he had, weighing the pros and cons of each one. It's remarkable though how after he presumably struggled through the process of deciding, he eventually changed his mind, listening to what the angel had told him in a dream, and followed what God asked him to do.
St. Joseph shows us a great example of what it is to be open to God's proddings and be obedient to Him. Angels may not visit us in our dream to relay God's message, but He certainly speaks to us through other means — in our prayer, through other people, in reading His Word or through our experiences.
Let us then pray that God helps us be more discerning of His voice so we can recognize it and be open to listening when He speaks. Let us pray as well that like St. Joseph, we may be able to put His will above ours and obey Him especially as we make the most important decisions in life.
St. Joseph, pray for us.
