Earlier this week our very own holistic nutritionist presented on the stress-disease connection.

Since stress is something that, as humans, we are constantly bombarded by and simply can’t escape, we wanted to share our major takeaways! ▪️ Stress is any excessive psychological or physical demands made on our bodies that surpass our ability to reasonable fulfill them. ▪️Our body’s biochemically and physiologically change in response to a stressor. This cascade of changes is called our “stress response” and it shifts our body into “fight or flight” mode. ▪️Being in Fight or Flight (Sympathetic Nervous System) shift our body to prepare to either fight or flee from a threat. ▪️Once the threat has been resolved our bodies shift into Rest and Digest (Parasympathetic Nervous System) which reverses the fight or flight changes to help our body return to homeostasis. ▪️If not properly dealt with ACUTE stress (👍🏼) can turn into CHRONIC stress (👎🏼) which, due to chronically elevator stress hormones, leaves the body in a vulnerable state that is very susceptible to disease. ▪️Stress and disease exacerbate each other leading to: advancement of disease, HPA-axis dysregulation, Risk for cardiovascular events and neuropsychiatric disorders, impaired immune function and weight gain, amongst others. ▪️The Brain, gut and skin are the top 3 organs affected by stress. These are where we first notice the physical signs of stress in our body. ▪️Find a technique that you like to manage your stress and work with a functional medicine practitioner to identify and address any underlying root causes of your stress.
