Close encounter with Namiba’s wild desert horses. There are about 100 wild horses that live in the landscape between Garub and Aus. There are many theories of their origins but the most solid theory is that they fled into the wild during bombings in the First World War.
They are most likely the only population of “feral”horses in Africa. They have caused a great deal of controversy over the past few years. Spotted Hyena have been coming further south to prey upon young horses... A controversial cull of hyena took place where a few of the carnivores were shot ,this has sparked a heated argument amongst locals. The reality is that the horses are introduced and hyena are native.
Still..... a beautiful animal.
