Posted @withrepost • @hillaryclinton On days like today, after yet another tragic mass shooting, I'm thinking of everyone affected—students, parents, teachers, administrators, siblings, neighbors.
I'm also thinking of champions for gun violence prevention like Sarah Brady, Nelba Marquez-Greene, Rep. @LucyMcBath , @ShannonRWatts —gutsy women all—and my friend @GabbyGiffords. They won't give up, and neither can we.
After a gunman shot her at a public meeting with constituents in Tucson, Gabby spent months in a rehabilitation facility working to recover her strength. She did it all with her trademark humor, kindness, and relentless optimism.
On August 1, 2011, Gabby returned to the House to vote and received a standing ovation before resigning the following January to focus on her physical and speech therapy.
I’ll never forget the sight of her standing there on the House floor, surrounded by friends and colleagues, as resolute and brave as ever. From that moment forward, with the support and partnership of her remarkable husband, former astronaut (and current Arizona Senate candidate!) Mark Kelly, she has dedicated her life to helping save the lives of others by advocating for gun violence prevention.
“We need politicians to show the same courage demonstrated by survivors of gun violence: challenge the NRA, and pass safer gun laws,” she has said. “But we also need to be tough. That’s why we hold politicians accountable when they take NRA money and vote against the safety of our kids and communities.”
Today, let's mourn those we've lost. Let's also resolve to join Gabby in holding our leaders accountable. As she said: We need to be tough. #EndGunViolence - 44 minutes ago
