Part of the lifestyle of ranching and farming is getting covered in mud/blood/poop/dirt/snow/hay/fuel/oil/equipment fluid/dust/whatever-else on a daily basis.
Hence, the necessity to scrub all that off at the end of most days. But, the ingredients in a lot of detergents, soaps, shampoos, and conditioners can get scary.
So, since I had run out of body soap, I decided to make my own today.
Here is the recipe I chose:
Liquid Castile Soap
Fresh Honey from my friends family farm in California
Baking Soda (the magic substance for everything)
On the right is my body soap bottle I have used for the past year. I finally used up the contents so I refilled it with the above ingredients.
The only thing I don't like about this is the other plastic bottles I had to use to purchase the ingredients.
In Laramie we are lucky enough to have the Big Hollow Coop where we can bring containers and fill them up and pay by weight. So after I use up these ingredients I can re-use the containers they came in at least.
Haven't found a solution for the liquid Castile soap yet. This is something I haven't found in bulk at the Co-op. I use this soap for EVERYTHING because you can pronounce and recognize all the ingredients. It is good enough to use on your body, dishes, and the kitchen floor. So at least I am condensing the many different soap bottles I could have- to one.
Another solution I have come to appreciate lately is shampoo bars. This recipe is body soap, but it also usable as shampoo and since I already had the bottle and these ingredients, I feel better about re-using it than recycling it for now. But shampoo bars and body soap bars wrapped in biodegradable paper are the bomb!
Next-up I am going to figure out how to use the lard I rendered from our hogs as lotion and maybe soap/conditioner. No plastic bottles or shipping needed there!
