Fact Friday: the population of deer in the UK has skyrocketed, in our corner of the country Fallow are the most prolific.
I love being able to observe them close up at home, but a perfect example of just how out of control the population has got, is that this evening I hit one whilst driving home from work.
The road is one that I have literally been driving on pretty much daily since I learnt to drive, and as a passenger since I was born. It’s about 1/2 mile from my parents farm, and I’ve never seen deer on that part of the road before.
Thankfully apart from a missing bit of trim, a slightly dazed deer, and a few (a lot) of tears from me, we’ve both come away unscathed. I know that adrenalin can cause a deer to get up and go but 🤞🏼 she’s ok, I’ll feel awful if she isn’t.
Deer management (i.e. stalking) is crucial not only to the health of the UK herd, but also for a vast number of other factors including safety on the roads.
