Among the photos taken during Day 1 of my trip to #Dalmatia , this is probably the most significant. We were crossing the #border between Slovenia and Croatia along an unpaved road surrounded by peaceful woods. In such a heavenly and natural environment, it was painful to see a barbed wire barrier “separating” the two countries - such a strong reminder of human stupidity. I also thought of the animals who live in those woods and may get injured or killed by those barriers.
Both Slovenia and Croatia are #European Union members, therefore the barrier is located on an internal EU border; but currently only Slovenia is a member of the free travel #Schengen Area, and so the barrier could be realized. Actually in 2015 Slovenia decided to construct barbed wire barriers and panel fencing on its border with Croatia, as a response to the European #migrant crisis. And in August this year, #Slovenia has begun to erect some additional fencing along the border with #Croatia , in those sections where migrant entries have increased.
#Migration is a complex phenomenon. Living in Italy, I know the difficulties created by the presence of strong migratory flows towards or through our country. However, being the daughter of a Polish man who left his country in 1973 and took refuge in Italy to escape the #communist regime, I also know the other painful side of the problem and I can only be in favour of open borders and #freedom of movement.
The Earth is one home and native land, we should enjoy and protect its beauties together! We are all born with equal right to live upon this planet. Where someone is born is entirely a matter of chance, so there is no moral justification for compelling people to stay in a specific country. Those who are lucky enough to have been born in countries where life is safer, easier and richer, have no right to exclude others from their fortune. People should intelligently analyze, manage and monitor migration in a rational and reasonable way, carefully observing the human rights of both the native populations of all countries and the migrants and #refugees who rightly so flee from oppression, violence and poverty in their own countries.
