“Work doesn’t feel so much like work when we’re doing it together.” This thought came to my mind recently on a Sunday afternoon. Weekends are supposed to be for family time and relaxing/recharging, but that’s changing in our house. As a small business owner, there are many things that I don’t get to handle during the week because I’m busy seeing my patients. I’ve started setting aside a few hours on Sunday afternoons to get a jump start on this work. Some of it involves patient care (reviewing records from other physicians, responding to emails, researching treatments for challenging conditions). The rest of it is for running my direct care medical practice (ordering supplies, checking that lab fees are correct, making sure accounts are up to date). .
In my former jobs as a family physician, I went to work, saw my patients, and came home. I also rushed through the day in an unhappy frame of mind, resenting how fast I had to work and how little time I had to look after my patients. But I brought very little work home with me. Now there is always something I can be doing in my down time and my computer goes everywhere with me. Oddly enough, I don’t mind working in this manner. I love the medical side and the business side of running my practice. And I really enjoy being part of a movement to improve healthcare and the way it’s delivered to in our country. .
I’ve made friends with other small business owners and found that we have the same struggle: even when you’re not working IN your business, you’re still working FOR your business. But the creativity, passion and joy of what we’re doing keeps us going. Figuring out how to work in a way that is balanced and not disruptive to your family life is key.
For me, this means working when my kids are working. When they are in school, I do the bulk of my in-office work. When they are studying at home, I sit next to them and get my stuff done. This way no one feels left out or alone. .
