[I sure as sh*t don't feel bad about this.] I was fresh off the plane in NYC, strolling through Grand Central Station when I happened to pass the Mac store. (Cosmetics, not computers.) Since I was in New York attending an event with some impeccably dressed women - several of whom were my clients - who would most certainly be arriving in professionally-applied makeup, I figured I’d better at least buy myself some new lipstick, lest I be mistaken for a common street urchin.
Turns out you can’t wear lipstick without liner.
And if you’re going to line your lips, you should probably get a brow set to balance your face out.
And if you’re going to go that far, then you may as well buy a $145 bag full of fabulous face paint.
Now I realize $145 is not a large sum. ...but it’s not about the number.
It’s about the feeling.
Did I feel a shred of guilt that I’d just spent more money than the sales guy makes in a day? Yes, for sure.
Did I question whether or not I “deserve” to be spending that kind of cash on myself? You bet I did.
Did I ask myself whether or not I could afford it? No, ma’am.
Truth is I can afford it. I don’t feel guilty about spending money that was honestly pretty darn easy come by.
I don’t feel bad about having monetized my passion for writing, even if that means I happen to earn more than the guy at the Mac store AND my ex-colleagues from law school.
But I didn’t start out feeling that way.
It took rather a lot of work to get to that place.
I meditated my ass off, got therapy, hypnotherapy, kinesiology, danced it out on my office floor, and aggressively dealt with my money baggage, because I knew that where I was going, there was no room for that.
