One of the biggest benefits of my sobriety is my ability to be present for life’s experiences. The good AND the bad. I am no longer under the influence of drugs and alcohol for everything I do. I am no longer filled with anxiety constantly. I still feel anxious, but it doesn’t consume me.
Anxiety is often giving the future too much mental and emotional space. Practicing mindfulness, I.e. being “all there,” can be so helpful in bringing us out of anxiety and into the present moment.
One of my favorite ways to do this is to pick up an item in the room, and describe it in as much detail as I can.
Another way is to simply be with my feet (as my sponsor has taught me). I ask myself, “Where are my feet right now?”
