Breaking down the axle clean. While the axle looks like a thicker version of a traditional barbell, there are some significant differences beyond the diameter of the bar.
Difference 1 - there is no knurling on the bar. This combined with the 2-3" thickness of the bar make it much more difficult to grip.
Difference 2 - the loading pins on the end don't rotate/revolve at all. This means that the athlete has to work harder to achieve a proper position.
The type of clean used by the athlete will vary based on their strengths, but the most common variations are the power clean as demonstrated by Joe, the continental clean as demonstrated by Elba, and the hip clean. Find the one that fits your needs and dominate it.
