Giving Gratitude to our Animals
Our animals don’t speak English or any other spoken language. They "speak" a language of emotions, of unconditional love, of pure present moment awareness. When you say, “good boy/girl” your dog isn’t necessarily understanding the words, they hear your tone and most of all they are feeling your energy of loving affection.
Have you ever wondered how to express appreciation and gratitude to your animal? Try this short exercise of Giving Gratitude using their language to connect inward and share feelings with your animal.
Take a moment when you can be calm and present. Gently close your eyes, place your hands over your heart, and breathe in deeply with the intention of tuning into your heart. Visualize your beloved animal, sitting in front of you. Gaze softly upon them in your mind's eye, hold the same unconditional love that they give you and offer a heartfelt “Thank You” with feeling rather than words. Stay here in the feeling of gratitude for a few moments, then when you are ready, slowly open your eyes and smile. (note: You may do this with your eyes softly open gazing into your animal's eyes. This may be done with at a distance, with a deceased pet or in person. Their language knows no boundaries.) How did it feel to send this communication?
Are there any shifts in you or your animal's body language?
Has either of you softened?
Has your animal blinked slowly, yawned, sighed, lip licked? These are physical indicators that your animal has "heard" you.
They may even mirror gratitude back to you by rubbing against you or doing something that they know makes you smile, like a head boop, a cuddle, bring you their favourite toy.
I believe our animal companions are on a mission to teach us how to appreciate the now of each moment and, by loving and accepting us unconditionally, they teach us how to feel the full spectrum of emotions.
Come back to this heart-centred place whenever you want to clearly communicate and connect to your animal as the language of the heart is the language of all animals.
