Here is my take on three words, that circle around so much in the self development space. We need to have a clear and simple definition of motivation, discipline and success. If we already have defined those three, we set our mind into a more systematic way of gathering evidences that supported this definition.
Let me put this way. I use my personal story as an example. I tried to lose weight, before and after college. I wanted to lose weight just 5 kg. I did not even set a time limit, that is how sad I am because I tried so much before to lose weight. That is my success. My success is 5 kg weight loss.
I set realistic goals in order for me to focus on how to build good daily eating, exercising and other habits that supported it. I knew that the goal or the what is only to provide direction to who I will become (identity). I wanted to become a more disciplined person, I wanted to become an energetic person. The numbers of weight loss is just to confirm on how my future identity will be.
Thank God, in 4 months, I lost 8 kg. I was happy, not because of the weight loss. The numbers confirm that my effort paid off. My real happiness lies on how my daily habits are better than before, and also how I see myself. I can now say "Oh wow, actually you look more athletic than ever before. Nice one Yus." Moral of the story is, focus on motivation (your why) and discipline (your how) much much more than your what. Results ALWAYS takes care of itself. Results always comes in its own terms. We all start with initial levels of motivation and discipline towards our own success. What we need to stack is the amount of reps we do every time. As the reps increase, so will the motivation. You will gather reasons on why you should maintain that habit. You will gather more reasons on why you should strive for your goals. By the time your goals are reached, you have became a better person, so much more than what the goal might be initially.
