Mindfulness | How to Practise Mindfulness Exercises for better Mental Health.
.
While mindfulness might seem simple, it’s not necessarily all that easy. The real work is to make time every day to just keep doing it. Here’s a short practice to get you started:
.
1. Take a seat. Find a place to sit that feels calm and quiet to you.
2. Set a time limit. If you’re just beginning, it can help to choose a short time, such as 5 or 10 minutes.
3. Notice your body. You can sit in a chair with your feet on the floor, you can sit loosely cross-legged, in lotus posture, you can kneel, all are fine. Just make sure you are stable & in a position you can stay in for a while.
4. Feel your breath. Follow the sensation of your breath as it goes out & as it goes in.
5. Notice when your mind has wandered. Inevitably, your attention will leave the sensations of the breath and wander to other places. When you get around to noticing this, in a few seconds, a minute, five minutes, simply return your attention to the breath.
6.Be kind to your wandering mind. Don’t judge yourself or obsess over the content of the thoughts you find yourself lost in. Just come back.

Mindfulness | What it is, Mental, Physical, Emotional & Creative Benefits.
.
Mindfulness is an integrative, mind-body based training that helps people to change the way they think & feel about their experiences, especially stressful experiences & it is recommended as a treatment for people with mental health problems.
.
Mindfulness exercises are ways of paying attention to the present moment, using techniques like meditation, breathing & yoga. Training helps people to become more aware of their thoughts, feelings & body sensations so that instead of being overwhelmed by them, they’re better able to manage them. Practising mindfulness can give more insight into emotions, boost attention & concentration & improve relationships.
.
Mindfulness can be practiced by children, young people & adults. There are different ways to practice mindfulness. Group courses run to practise mindfulness in person & there are online courses too where you can learn through self-directed practice at home. You don’t need to be religious or spiritual to practise mindfulness & it can help people with or without religious beliefs.
.
Mindfulness can be useful for people from all different walks of life & the number of areas that mindfulness is being applied to is growing.

Self-care is something most of us give inadequate time & response to daily. Mostly wanting to focus our energy & concerns on the needs of others. If we fail to look after ourselves well enough, we will eventually exhaust our energy & discover that we can no longer do the things that are important to us.
.
Self-care is about doing small things for yourself, creating some different routines that will improve your physical, mental, and / or emotional health, & move you towards your desired outcome. If it's just getting out of bed on a bad day, showering, going for a walk, eating a healthy meal, reaching out to a friend, writing down some goals, whatever it is, try something new daily, even if it last 5 minutes. Try it daily & overtime build on it & watch yourself grow mentally, physically & emotionally into a stronger person & place. Love, care & appreciate yourself & understand that you deserve to be happy & healthy in life.

Mental Illness carries an unwanted social construct, that people who battle one are "Weak". This couldnt be further from the truth! Anyone that is experiencing or has experienced a mental illness knows the struggle of having to go to work daily, to support a family, to go to college, to get up out of bed, to eat healthily, to simply dress your bed & shower.
.
People that battle a mental illness do every day what a person with a strong mental health does but while fighting negative thoughts & feelings, urges of hopelessness, feelings of despair & much unknown feelings that cant be described.
.
Believe me when I say, if you are battling a mental illness, "You are strong", you have battled this alone & persevered. "You are stong" & can get stronger by sharing your feelings & opening up.

"You were created to be victorious".
.
Although you may be feeling less than victorious right now, you may be feeling worthless & hopeless. Allow yourself to experience it first of all & then encourage yourself to fight it & to become the person you were meant to be. You might not be able to fight this alone, which is completely normal, so allow yourself to reach out for help & share how you are feeling. It is by opening up, seeking professional help, setting goals, creating an exercise routine & realising that it's okay not to be okay, that you too can begin to manage your mental illness. It will take time, so don't be discouraged when it doesn't happen over night. Remember that managing your Mental Health & becoming the victorious person that you were meant to be is more of a marathon than a sprint.

Beginning any new Exercise Routine can be daunting, especially if you’re experiencing a mental illness, where the idea of just getting out of bed can seem hard enough. It's so important to know that Exercise can play a major part in your recovery & should be in your management plan.
.
You’re more likely to stick with a new behaviour if it’s linked to something you really value in life. Ask yourself, “why will exercise make my life better in a meaningful way?” Just add five per cent to what you’re currently doing. If you’re stuck on the couch, just walking in your street each day is a great start.
.
Timetable your exercise into your weekly schedule so you aren’t relying as much on willpower. Do an exercise that you enjoy, exercise doesn’t have to be serious. If you hate running or going to the gym, you’re unlikely to keep it up. Find an activity you enjoy (or at least don’t dislike) & you’re more likely to keep doing it.
.
Set goals & monitor progress, it’s very rewarding to track your progress towards a specific goal. It makes every exercise session feel purposeful.
.
Make a commitment to others – you’re less likely to opt out if you have a friend or team relying on you to be there.
.
Most importantly, be kind to yourself if you haven’t exercised for a while. For many, this can trigger self-critical thoughts that lead to giving up the exercise routine entirely.
.
Treat each day as a fresh start & remind yourself that it’s human to drop the ball occasionally.

Comparing yourself to other's can be harmful to your mental health.
.
We are all designed to have different personalities, strengths & weaknesses. So, in constantly comparing yourself to others, you are subconsciously telling yourself that the things that are different about must be negative. These comparisons can lead you to demoralize who you are & to minimize the wonderful things that make you special. After a period of time it is possible that these comparisons could lead to low feelings of self worth & depression. To be clear, comparing yourself to others isn’t inherently a bad thing. Having a sense of envy can put you in touch with your inner desires. If you’re mooning over your friends’ successes, maybe you can direct some energy into improving facets of your own life.
.
Here are some tips that have helped me to stop comparing myself to other's; I have become more aware of what i say, I count my blessings each day for the things I have, I focus on my strengths & pursue the things that I love, I am OK with my imperfections & understand that it's part of what makes me, me! I don't ever knock others down & finally each day I focus on my journey, what I want achieve & the mental stability I want to create for myself.

For me I always ask myself why I am doing this & it's for my mental health, physical health, to continue to manage & beat my mental illness, to help me professionally & just overall to be a happier person. YES, it's so easy to say these things & do nothing about it, but that's where setting goals come in, no matter how small or big they are, always have something you want to achieve & more. Whether you want to get out for 3 walks in the week, cook at least one healthy meal a day, meditate every second day, whichever goal(s) you want to achieve, set them! Finally, understanding mentally that it's ok to begin all over again, even if you've been in this place many times before. It may be stormy now, but it never rains forever!

Exercise | Aerobic & Anaerobic Exercise Differences & Benefits.
.
You're likely familiar with the term aerobic from aerobics classes. Aerobic exercise uses oxygen to create energy. During aerobic exercise, the body primarily burns carbohydrates and fats, which can only be done in the presence of oxygen.
.
The anaerobic definition of exercise is simple: anaerobic energy can be created without oxygen. The body breaks down carbohydrates from blood glucose or glucose stored in muscle to produce energy. It can produce this type of energy very quickly but in limited supply.
.
It’s important to incorporate both aerobic and anaerobic exercises into your fitness routine in order to strengthen both your cardiovascular system and your spine, muscle, and nervous system. They also serve to improve your mood, mental health, flexibility, weight control, and reduce the risk of diseases.

Your mind, mood, attitude & your mental health affect every aspect of your life, from how you feel about yourself to your relationships with others & your physical health.
.
There's a strong link between good mental health & good physical health, & vice versa. There are many ways to keep your mind, mood & attitude in optimal shape. Exercise, healthy eating, gratitude, stress reduction techniques like meditation or mindfulness can keep your brain & your body in tip-top shape. When your mood, attitude & mental health slip, doing something about it as early as possible can keep the change from getting worse.
.
Exercise for many might not be the only solution to treating your mental illness, so visiting a professional is vitally important. Your local GP may provide support directly or refer you on to community mental health services. There are a number of support groups, different counselling / psychotherapy services, aswell as helplines for particular issues or at times of crisis.

"Your mental illness is not a personal failure".
.
I believed for many years my mental illness was such a hindrance for everyone. I would always try & brush it off without even wanting to acknowledge it, but unfortunately that made things worse. I fell deeper into my mind that I needed to put on a social "mask" to hide my true feelings & emotions. Don't get me wrong that lasted for a period of time, & I felt I had everything under control but in fact I had just been applying even more pressure to a severe situation. I was too afraid to open up, I was too afraid to show my true feelings.
.
Then for whatever reason one day, I opened up to a close family member & from there I opened up to family & friends. It's so hard to describe, but the elated feeling I got from opening up was so immense, tears would flow for ages & that was the best thing ever, years of emotions bottled up had now been given the chance to flow & express themselves. Counselling played a massive role, still does, in my recovery & management of my Anxiety & Depression.
.
So, please I ask you if you are battling a mental illness, please please open up & tell someone. You're illness is not a reflection of you, it's not your fault, you don't deserve it so don't allow it to beat you down, Open Up to Rise Up & seek the necessary help to better yourself!
