Renderings of a net zero ready modern farmhouse to be built in Yarmouth, Maine. Clients usually want to know how long the design process takes, and my answer is, "It depends." I CAN design a house or renovation in a few weeks, but designing a house is a team activity and just because I like a design doesn't mean that all parties agree. Many times what people THINK they want changes once we get a design on paper, and especially after we get builder pricing.

This project has been in development for almost two years, but don't worry, that's not with constant effort on my part--my clients are just fully considering every detail, and trying to keep the square footage down while including all of their "needs" and as many of their "wants" as possible under a relatively tight budget. 
On larger projects like this I often collaborate with other design professionals. For the early stages of design for this project I worked with my friend @lehnenalex; we've worked together on many projects and he also did these excellent renderings. For the middle stages of design I worked alone. Now we're in the home stretch on a revised design, with help from my friend @robertswinburne, which will look a lot like a mirror image of these renderings from the exterior, but with a different floor plan. New Builds are now required to take efficiency into account, and builders here in Kamloops are stepping up to the challenge!  Bottom line?  Your home is likely already Solar Ready!  Not sure what level your builder is on?  Ask them!  The more we know, the more we can play an active part in this city's development. --- Builders are now able to construct to the standards of Step 1, Step 2 or Step 3 at little to no additional cost, without impacting the market price paid by consumers. A study completed in 2017 shows that constructing homes and apartment buildings to Step 3 in most parts of the province would result in 20% energy savings and less than 1.5% incremental construction costs — an amount easily offset by energy bill savings. In fact, some regions of the province, such as the Okanagan and Southern Interior, could even see savings on construction alone if they adopted Step 2 or 3 as their base requirement.

It was only a year-and-a-half ago that GlasCurtain won the specification for the curtain wall at the new Red Deer College (RDC) Residence by Manasc Isaac, and now students are already enjoying the zen-like halls of the five-storey building for the Fall Semester.

Working with our Installation Partner All-Weather Windows Commercial, this project features our gorgeous ThermSSG white-painted fibreglass-framed curtain wall very much like those on the recently completed Nunavut Arctic College in Iqaluit.

The new RDC Residence also stands out for its impressive 163 kW photovoltaic (PV) array covering the east, south, and west facades, which makes for a fabulously Manichaean contrast between the dark solidity of the PV and the near weightlessness of the seven glass curtain wall "voids." The result is a juxtapositional and almost counterintuitive lightness to the whole mass, one that still gives a respectful nod to neighbouring Arthur Erickson buildings. From the interior, there's nothing but resplendent airiness to encourages interaction. With 145 dormitory units in addition to an exquisite variety of communal spaces and shared amenities, students at RDC are already enjoying this vibrant environment for learning, living, and more.
