Functional cues 🀩
I’m a new teacher. I began teaching in January 2017 straight out of my YTT. I’m coming up to my 2 year anniversary soon and I’ve learned so much. So much has happened. So much learning. I had a chat with a friend/student lastnight after class about cues. We talked about the infamous Chaturanga. Recently I completed a functional anatomy yang module within my Yin training. Chaturanga came up with shoulder work. It blew my mind how I never put it together. Sometimes you need someone to tell you the obvious. How drawing elbows back by the ribs is not for every BODY. It is for some but not all. We compared someone with rounded shoulders with someone like myself who is not. Person 1 could do Chaturanga a all day, for me, it’s harder with the alignment cue. It made sense because my elbows track out when I lower. Whatever way my shoulder anatomy is, they naturally do this. It’s comfortable for me. Instead of rotating my shoulders to an unnatural position and then adding load. I have such issues with my left side. I had a cyst in my left wrist for the guts of 2 years and I can’t blame Chaturanga or know exactly where it came from but I am guessing aesthetic yoga and maybe a pericardium meridian blockage πŸ˜‚ I remember teaching a full workshop on Chaturanga πŸ˜… wrapping belts around the arms to train elbows back. Why? Because AESTHETICS. It’s how it’s done right? How it SHOULD look? Or how I THINK it should be taught. Ha. Wrong. The guilt that rose in me during this part of the module πŸ™ but we are ever evolving beings. Work to understand your own body and how it moves. A yoga teacher can guide you through a practice but ultimately, you are your own teacher. So another cue for Chaturanga? Just bend the elbows and lower as best you can with control πŸ’œ

If you want to succeed, You've got to be willing to do what nobody else is willing to do, go where nobody else is willing to go, to get where you want to be.

Everyone has the same 24 hrs in a day, 7 days a week. But it's what you do with your time is what matters. If your willing to get up a few hours earlier and sleep a little later then you've already given yourself an advantage. 
When 9 or 10 hr shifts feel like half days, then you know your putting the work in.
Dont just work for someone, work on you.

Dont spend time putting the work into something unless you have passion for it. It's a lot more rewarding doing something you love than doing something to just get by. F**k just getting just by.

The average person spends about a third of there life sleeping and another third working up until they retire, if even we make it that far. 
It's up to you on how you want to use your time, So use it wisely and do something that makes you happy.

Pyramid sets are basically whenever you start off with a lighter weight and as the sets progress you increase the weight but lower the reps.  The idea of this concept is that muscle fatigue won't occur whenever you are increasing the weight from the starting set and to get more volume in.  Do I think it's worth while?

So when dealing with the same volume no matter how you slice it the strength and endurance gained is very similiar.  If we were executing a reverse pyramid or "drop set" you could gain more endurance from the extra volume in the hypertophy rep range.

IMO, I think they are good if you are bored of the same routine or want to increase some staminia/endurance but these days I basically treat all my sets after my warm up on the same weight as my working set.

Progress takes years

It takes trying, failing, learning and repeating time and time again until you get closer to your desired outcome

Progress is rarely linear, life happens and things that seemed important once are no longer on your radar

For me when I look at my own journey, I see of course a physical journey but to be honest with each photo I remember the place I was at mentally!

Anyone that knew a younger version of me, will remember an overweight, shy and a boy who felt completely uncomfortable in the person he was trying to be

As I grew I used the gym as a place to grow in confidence and find my purpose. Perhaps at the start my reason to train was to seek acceptance from others, now I look back and smile.

My purpose has changed

I sit at a point in my life where I understand my purpose, what I stand for, my abilities, my flaws and the impact I’m trying to make

Like everyone we have times where self doubt creeps in, but it’s at those times we need to look back and remember just how far we have came

We all have the power to create something that makes us happy. That starts and ends with YOU! πŸ’ͺ🏻

πŸ™πŸ™πŸ’ͺ🏻 Progress takes years - It takes trying, failing, learning and repeating time and time again until you get closer to your desired outcome - Progress is rarely linear, life happens and things that seemed important once are no longer on your radar - For me when I look at my own journey, I see of course a physical journey but to be honest with each photo I remember the place I was at mentally! - Anyone that knew a younger version of me, will remember an overweight, shy and a boy who felt completely uncomfortable in the person he was trying to be - As I grew I used the gym as a place to grow in confidence and find my purpose. Perhaps at the start my reason to train was to seek acceptance from others, now I look back and smile. - My purpose has changed - I sit at a point in my life where I understand my purpose, what I stand for, my abilities, my flaws and the impact I’m trying to make - Like everyone we have times where self doubt creeps in, but it’s at those times we need to look back and remember just how far we have came - We all have the power to create something that makes us happy.
