—> Who here is a graphic novel lover?
🍁🍁🍁
Happy Friday, folks! Hope you’ve all had a great week so far, and have a lovely weekend ahead of you. As you can see, I’m getting a little ahead of myself and am now showing off my copy of PUMPKIN HEADS by Rainbow Rowell and Faith Erin Hicks. I really like Rainbow Rowell as an author, so I was really excited when I saw this graphic novel was in the works - and now I have a copy in my hands. The illustrations are gorgeous, and the story sounds so sweet. Can’t wait to read it (probably going to save it for October)!

R is for reading. This new novel from @mikegaylethenovelist was totally unputdownable. My mum bought it for me in the UK. I planned to read it on the plane ride home but I’m pleased I didn’t because a) it made jet lag and sleepless nights seem like a bonus and b) I ugly cried most of the way through. It’s one of those books that you just have to finish and then mourn when it’s over. I hope Mike has mastered the art of speed writing because I can’t wait for his next novel!

I’d go a long way for a good reading nook: books tucked into every corner, a cosy chair, a window seat with a view. (Oo, now I fancy re-reading A Room with a View, which I adored as a teen and is actually a pretty good novel for a young girl: when George tells Lucy Cecil loves her for what she is, whereas he loves her for who she is. 💕)

—> Do you like historical fiction with a splash of fantasy?
🍁🍁🍁
#currentlyreading ENCHANTÉE by Gita Trelease, which is set in 18th century Paris, on the cusp of revolution. The story centres around Camille, as she struggles to make enough money to keep herself and her sister from losing their home. To do so, she employs the art of la magie ordinaire - the ability to change a thing’s appearance; in this way, she turns small bits of metal into valuable coins. But magic takes its toll on the user, and it soon becomes clear that a few coins aren’t going to be enough to secure them a better life. And so she turns to glamoire, the kind of magic that can change one’s outward appearance, and infiltrates the Palace of Versailles on the hopes of winning more money for herself and her sister. But now is a bad time to dress up as an aristocrat.
🍁🍁🍁
I’m absolutely loving this book so far. It’s richly detailed, but not bogged down by over-flowery descriptions, with such a relatable and sympathetic main character in Camille. There are glittering courts and dark alleyways; there are hot-air balloons and magicians; there’s a great sibling relationship and lots of intrigue. I really recommend this one for its sense of place, its great characters, and a sort of underlying current of unease. I’m not wanting to put it down. In fact, speak to you guys later - I’m off to read!

My current read. I'm not a fast reader. It usually takes me forever to get through a book but I always try to pick something up even if I don't finish it. I enjoy it, but it's like I'm wanting to prove something to myself, one thing being that "There's still time for this," and making sure I don't get lazy so I've started reading again more than just picking up the newspaper. But I'll be doing some other things as well.. I'm opening up and have started fighting for a better quality of life in some ways. Right now, it's literature. I love it! The way the aroma comes off the pages as you turn them 🥰

—> What are some of your favourite time periods for books to be set in?
🍁🍁🍁
#gifted | “It’s 1945 and Martin Heath, like many men at that time, is struggling to settle, to find his place again after the horrors of war. But an old comrade sends him a letter, telling of a position that’s just come up with an elderly fellow called Mr Godley in the deepest and loneliest part of Devon. Martin travels there and so begins a dark mystery ...”
🍁🍁🍁
MR GODELY’S PHANTOM by Mal Peet - part ghost story, part detective novel - sounds like such a good autumn read. His books have been on my radar for years, but I’ve sadly never picked one up. Hoping to change that before the year is out!
🍁🍁🍁
Many thanks to @dfb_storyhouse for sending me the this beautiful edition of Mal Peet’s last book. I really appreciate it!

Who's gearing up for #nanowrimo? I've always been intrigued but have never participated... until now! 😊 I will admit, 50,000 words is a little intimidating, but I plan to give it my best shot.

Head over to @nanowrimo and get the free workbook to help you get ready for November! The link is in their bio!

—> What’s your favourite atmosphere to read in? Do you need complete quiet? Or do you like some ambience, like on a train or in a cafe?
🍁🍁🍁
#gifted | Now I know I’m not exactly on a train in this photo, but THE GIRL WHO READS ON THE MÉTRO by Christine Ferét-Fleury found its way into the staff room at work, and I wanted to take a special photo for it. Honestly not sure how I feel about the result, but it’s certainly a bit different to what we normally do. Hope you like it!
🍁🍁🍁
THE GIRL WHO READS ON THE MÉTRO is officially released in the UK on the 17th of October. | It tells the story of Juliette, who takes the Métro to work every day, and uses this time to read and escape for a little while. One day, however, she decides to get off the train a few stops early, and meets the mysterious owner of an enchanting bookshop. The owner employs special passeurs and entrusts them with the task of giving out books to the people who need them most. And he thinks Juliette may be perfect for the job. | Thanks to @panmacmillan for very kindly sending this proof to my workplace for us to check out!

Nothing like curling up in the morning with a good book and some delicious coffee!

I was tagged by @readlingoctopus714 for the #thickthighstightspines tag. I'm definitely rocking my plaid leggings today for this one!

Also sharing my mug and current read of Remains by @andrew_cull for a new weekly tag of #coffeeandcurrentlyreading that @thelittlereadingmermaid has started!

I'm absolutely adoring this book and these tags! If you wanting to participate in either, consider yourself tagged by me!

We made it to day seven - hoorah! Today, we’re recommending a duology that you guys probably all know, and lots of you have already read: the SIX OF CROWS duology by Leigh Bardugo. Just in case you haven’t come across this series before, SIX OF CROWS take place in Bardugo’s Grishaverse, which she established in her first book - and series - SHADOW & BONE. The Grisha are a type of gifted individual, whose talents may lie within the fields of elemental magic, magic to create, magic to heal, magic to hurt. In this duology, we follow a ragtag group who live on the streets of Ketterdam, a city that values commerce above all else. Here, gangs rule the streets, and merchants control the flow of money. And many powerful people are vying to get their hands on an extremely valuable - and volatile - product. Kaz Brekker, leader of the Crows, is approached by one of the richest merchants in Ketterdam, and offered a lot of money in exchange for something - or someone. Which will require a covert operation, and a daring heist, to break into (and then out of) the formidable Ice Court. SIX OF CROWS is much darker than Bardugo’s previous work: the characters are morally grey, the setting more gritty. I love the members of the Crows, who all have their own distinct personalities, their own motivations and histories; it’s so hard not to fall in love with them. Even if you weren’t too fond of SHADOW & BONE, I can’t recommend this duology to you enough!
