🍑Call Me by Your Name Discussion: Part 2 (Monet's Berm)
.
It's nearly a week late, but it's finally up!
.
In Part 2, Elio finally explores his emotions and attraction for Oliver and at the same time embarks on a relationship with Marzia. We get to finally see the side of Oliver that Elio questioned frequently, and learn that he was wrong about Oliver from the beginning and Oliver has felt more for him than we all realized.
.
🍑 Early in Part 2, Elio thinks of the conversation on the piazzetta and its significance for the rest of his life. He thinks, "In thirty, forty years, I'll come back here and think back on a conversation I knew I'd never forget, much as I might want to someday." There is also the book that Oliver picks up that Elio has inscribed that he hopes will make Oliver think of him years from then when he picks it up ("I wanted him to ache..."), and a reference to Elio being in Cape Cod "years later" -- is everyone hoping these are referenced in Find Me as much as I am?
🍑 After sleeping with Oliver, Elio experiences a lot of shame and even starts to pull away and withdraw from Oliver. Do you think this is entirely due to gender, or do you think something else is behind this?
🍑 And OF COURSE we are talking about the peach scene. I view this as a way to almost become one another. To consume, to encapsulate. So completely obsessed, physically and mentally, with this person that they want to share as much as physically possible. It is bridged with the title, calling one another by their own names/becoming each other, etc. It's also shown during the moment when Oliver wears Elio's swimming trunks (" -- what was mine was suddenly his, just as what belonged to him could be all mine now.") among a few other significant moments. What do you think about this infamous scene?
.
As always I would love to hear any and all thoughts you've had about the book so far!
.

Apparently #signetsaturday is a thing? I love that! I have a list of Signets I'm on the hunt for, they are strangely hard to find in my city, and I finally found two of them (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame and Chekhov: The Major Plays -- I already owned Madame Bovary!). I still have quite an extensive list of what I'm looking for, but that's part of the fun. The hunt that finally leads to that "oh my god" discovery 😍

REVIEW: Maurice
.
❝Two men can defy the world. ❞
.
★★★★★
.
EM Forster originally completed this gorgeous book in 1914, but requested it to be published after his death (which ended up being 1971, a year after his passed). Thinking about Forster living through this, the fact that it was illegal to be yourself, and still wrote this book broke my heart.
.
Maurice experiences his first love, and with that, his open heart and mind lead him to become who he truly is. Maurice's whole heart is laid out on the pages, and many times I found myself wanting to just comfort him. Even with how difficult it could be to like him at times. That was something I appreciated: the fact that Forster gave us a character that wasn't immediately easy to like. It would've been so simple for him to write a sensitive, loving, adventurous character because that, in turn, would have made it so simple for our hearts to ache for him. But instead we were given a snob that says ugly things and we were shown that yes, even this guy still deserved to be loved and happy.
.
I normally don't annotate the first time I read a book, I usually let the first read just be a "surface read", but I had to with this one. This book immediately called out for it, there was a quality to the writing that jumped out at me within the first page. It's such a gorgeous book, I couldn't get enough of it. And that ending! The ending of this book was everything for me. You go through numerous years of Maurice's life, and it all accumulates to a truly beautiful dosage of poetic justice (as well as something that Maurice truly deserved).
.
As I was reading, I would think about how hard it must have been for Forster to just exist. He was living during a time wherein it was a criminal offence to be who he was. While this wasn't about him directly, I know he put a lot of his own heart and life into this, and that made me just appreciate it even more.

Whenever I go thrifting for books, Steinbeck is always the first author I look for but I walk away empty-handed more often than not. However, I found five beautiful editions when I went on Monday!
.
I've read some of his smaller novels this month, and I've loved them all. I put off reading more of his work for so long because I was worried they wouldn't live up to the expectations the East of Eden set, but I'm so glad they've all proven me wrong so far 😍

Yesterday was Thanksgiving and so, because I am not a big holiday person, my husband and I spent the day together and went to one of my favorite book shops 😍 We hit up the two locations in the city that are further away from us that we don't go to very often, and I walked away with a great haul. Three more Signets for my collection, and FIVE more editions of Steinbeck 😍😍😍

Repost since I'm an idiot and made a mistake on the first one!
.
I am SO EXCITED to share this that I couldn't wait any longer. I've hosted challenges before with Marcella, but this will be the first one I've done all on my own! November will officially be #nineinchnovember 🤗
.
My favorite band of all time is Nine Inch Nails. I honestly cannot even put into words how much of a genius I think Trent Reznor is. Not just his music with NIN, but his side projects and movie scores. I had been wanting to do a monthly challenge to celebrate how great I think Reznor for quite awhile, so here we are! The photo I used for the challenge is one I took at the concert a few years ago, as well, and it was one of the best concerts I have ever been to 😭
.
I know I need plenty of time to plan my posts for challenges, so if anyone is planning on joining along, hopefully this is enough time for you as well!
.
Also, my favorite NIN album is The Fragile, which definitely shows in this challenge. I tried to use an equal amount from album and movie scores, but I definitely favoured The Fragile and there is more songs from that album than any other ones.

My second entry for #7bookcoverschallenge 🤗 Do you know how hard it is to post a book I love without saying anything about it? I'm struggling big time here!
.
So, what're your weekend plans? My husband and I voting today for the federal election (yay for early voting!), and then tomorrow we are spending 5-6 hours driving to visit his family for Thanksgiving. I fall asleep if I drive more than 40mins so I get to be the passenger and I'll be able to get a lot of reading in!

The Time Traveller's Wife is one of my all-time favourite books. I remember when I saw the trailer for About Time and just assumed it was going to be just a rip-off of TTTW. Oooh boy, was I wrong! Even with how alarmingly similar some of the plot points are (and the fact that Rachel McAdams is in both the adaptation of TTTW and About Time), each story is so individual and beautiful. They don't bleed into one another at all, and each stand on their own offering something wonderful.
.
📓The Time Traveller's Wife
Henry DeTamble has a condition, Chrono-Displacement Disorder, that causes him to spontaneously time travel. He has no control over where he goes, all he knows is that it's a time in his life with a distinctive emotional pull. He meets Clare when he is 36 and she is 6, and they are married when she is 23 and he is 31 -- when they first met, he had travelled to the past. In real-time, they had already been married for five years. You move through the course of their lives together experiencing the jarring and unexpected jumps through time that Henry, and in turn Clare, have to navigate.
.
Sidenote: avoid the adaptation. It's horrible.
.
📼About Time
Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) learns that the men in his family have the ability to time travel. The scene where his father, played by Bill Nighy, tells him about this is basically perfect. He uses this ability to improve his life (go back and make better choices, though this doesn't always work), and inevitably meets Mary. Even with it being about their life, there is still more to it. There is one portion of the movie where he goes through his day like normal, with the usual irritations and mundane happenings, and then goes back to restart his day and focus on the little moments that made it special and actually really fantastic. It's genuinely a wonderful movie. .

🍑Call Me by Your Name Discussion: Part One (If Not Later, When?)
.
I'm so excited for our first discussion post! Please keep in mind that there will be spoilers in both the post and the comments, so be careful!
.
Obviously, you're not required to answer these questions, but these are just some things I thought about Part One while reading and would love to know your thoughts. Any thoughts about the book at all!
.
🍑 Elio says at one point that he tries to get as much said as possible ("I was seventeen that year and, being the youngest at the table and the least likely to get listened to, I had developed the habit of smuggling as much information into the fewest possible words. I spoke fast ..."), do you think this is reflected in the writing style?
🍑 It is a very internal, and intimate POV on Elio's behalf -- what do you think Oliver's side of Part One would look like?
🍑 Do you think Elio could be considered an unreliable narrator?
.
I can't wait for everyone to read the rest of this book, or for those of you that plowed through it, I can't wait to hear what you thought of it altogether.

At some point in the last month, someone tagged me to take part in the #7bookcoverschallenge (I think that's what it's called?) ... But I can't remember who it was, because I didn't save the post and my memory is trash 🤗
.
Anyway, here is my submission for cover no. 1! I am trying to share books I know I don't share too often, because at this point I think some of you know a lot of my favorites already 😉

I think, regardless of how common these covers are and how often I see them at secondhand shops, they never fail to surprise me with how beautiful they are. They are so simple, and they call to details in the story (like the frogs on the cover of Cannery Row) which I love because as you read and get to those points it all makes sense. That "aha!" moment is one of the best feelings ever!

I love movies and books about brother/sister relationships. Maybe it's because I'm a "big sister," and even though both my brothers are approaching their 30s, they will always be babies to me (I am 5 and 6 years older than them, they are only 15 months apart). That said, I feel like I'll Give You the Sun and The Skeleton Twins mesh well together. They complement one another. They have their significant differences, of course, but on the surface, they are both heart-heavy stories following twins trying to navigate their lives and rebuild their relationship. They also both happened to be released the same year.
.
📓I'll Give You the Sun
Jude and Noah are brother and sister (obviously) and were inseparable when they were children. When they are both 13, they stop talking and now three years later, the story is from both their points of view (Noah covers the earlier years, whereas Jude covers the later years). Both Jude and Noah are grappling to come to terms with realizations about themselves, and their family.
.
📼The Skeleton Twins
Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig play Milo and Maggie. While older than Noah and Jude, they too have a fractured relationship. At the beginning of the movie, it's been ten years since they've spoken to one another. Milo, due to circumstances that I don't want to spoil but you can probably figure out from the trailer, moves in with Maggie and her husband. Maggie's husband means well, but he is completely clueless and has no idea how much she is struggling. Through both sides of their problems, they attempt a healthier relationship with each other and themselves.

Both Jude and Noah are grappling to come to terms with realizations about themselves, and their family. . 📼The Skeleton Twins Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig play Milo and Maggie. Through both sides of their problems, they attempt a healthier relationship with each other and themselves. . . . #bookstagram #booknerd #bookworm #bookporn #bookish #igreads #booklove #readersofig #bookobsessed #bookaddict #bibliophile #readingisfundamental #fortheloveofreading #readmore #readmorebooks #idratherbereading #illgiveyouthesun #jandynelson #theskeletontwins #billhader #kristenwiig - 19 days ago

⛸️REVIEW: Over the Top
.
❝I found a lot of my healing when I realized my suffering didn't undo my joy. ❞
.
★★★★★
.
When I first watched Queer Eye, I was immediately drawn in by JVN's passionate personality. I kept thinking, "This is someone I want to be around." He is entirely himself, 100% unapologetic. I feel like we have been conditioned to look down on flamboyancy as some weakness, and I think JVN is a beautiful example of how flawed that is. JVN shows everyone that being human, and being 100% authentically yourself, comes in a million different variations.
.
This book is JVN, through and through. As I was reading, it was in his voice.  I laughed more than I expected to, and also cried more than I expected to. He reveals things that he did and had been exposed to throughout his life that broke my heart. He struggled a lot with his identity, his place in the world, and the direction he was trying to take his life. At the beginning of the book he asks, "Would you still love me if you knew all my parts?", because everyone sees him as this bold TV personality, and as I finished the last page I knew that yes, I definitely did.
.
Jonathan is one of the most effervescent, loving, beautiful human beings I think we have ever been graced with. Between JVN and Lizzo, I couldn't think of a better time to be alive.

🎃 OCTOBER TBR
.
I’m keeping things super simple right now because I have some crazy reading plans that I kind of need to give some breathing room, haha.
.
Call Me by Your Name – a re-read I’ve had planned for ages and am so excited to have arranged #callmebyyourreadalong (my first readalong)!
Fever Dream – my pick for #unreadshelfproject2019 (it takes a lot to scare me, so I don’t expect it to, but it’s a horror I’ve been looking forward to)
It – another re-read I have been itching to get to. I plan to read other books this month, so this is one that I will be reading on the weekends. I don’t expect to finish it this month, but I’d like to chip away at at least half of it.
.
What are you looking forward to the most this month?
.
#grimdragon • you’re my obsession: tbr
#nightwormschallenge • welcome October

🍂SEPTEMBER WRAP-UP
.
I didn't read everything I planned. I DNF'd The Power, and never got around to Autumn, but I did find two new favourites. I started the month with a TBR of 361, and after reading 9 books, unhauling 2, and buying 4, I'm now at 354! I wonder if I could get under 300 by the end of the year? A girl can dream, right?
.
★★★★★:
Over the Top, Maurice
.
★★★☆☆:
Rebecca, Gooseberries, Sacred Time, & Pull Me Under
.
★★☆☆☆:
Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Natural Way of Things
.
★☆☆☆☆:
My Best Friend's Exorcism
.
9 books/2,517 pages
.
What was your favourite book in August? Did you read everything you had planned on?

I'm so excited for the #callmebyyourreadalong to start tomorrow! I'm setting up the group chat today, so if there is anyone else that is still interested let me know!
.
For anyone reading this the first time, I think you're so lucky because I think this is such a fantastic and beautiful book -- experiencing it for the first time is really wonderful.

When it comes to sets or collections of certain editions, do you like to collect them all or just the ones you truly enjoy? The completionist in me feels like I should have the entire set, all 26, of the Penguin Drop Caps but I can't justify it just because they are pretty 😂 I only have three more I want (S, U, & Z) and then my portion of the collection is complete.
.
Also, who designed F (Flaubert)? That green on yellow is not forgiving.

This is something I've thought about doing before, but I second-guess myself SO MUCH (damn you, Imposter Syndrome) and always talked myself out of it. But not this time!
.
So consider this my first installment of "If You Like This, You Might Like This Other Thing, Too." Clearly, witty titles are my calling. If you liked I'll Be Gone in the Dark, I think you'd also be a fan of The Fall (or, vice versa!).
.
I'll Be Gone in the Dark is a gorgeously written true crime about the Golden State Killer (also known as East Area Rapist and Original Night Stalker) and Michelle McNamara's admitted obsession with figuring out who he was. He eluded capture until just a few years ago, which is unsettling enough. But reading about his routine with finding victims and going into their homes before his planned attack (to "prep" their home, among other things) was terrifying. McNamara's passion was evident from the first word on, and she did an incredible job.
.
The Fall, in another country altogether, is about a serial killer with a routine similar to Golden State Killer. Both killers were known in their communities, and those in their lives are entirely oblivious to what's going on. While this is the case for a lot of serial killers, I found myself comparing this plot to EAR/ONS the most. And, Gillian Anderson is beyond comprehension in this and blew me away. She too becomes obsessed, and in her, I saw a lot of McNamara's passion.
